Future perspectives of underground cabling

The Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) invites to an international workshop on “The prospects of undergrounding power lines”. The event will take place on 5 and 6 July in Raesfeld, in the northwestern part of the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. This location has not been chosen randomly, since in Raesfeld the workshop participants have the great opportunity to explore an ongoing cable project conducted by TSC member Amprion, one of the four German transmission system operators (TSOs). Amprion serves also as host of the RGI event.

What is the status quo of underground cabling for power transmission in Europe? Firsthand-accounts from TSOs and stakeholders on pilot cable projects like the one in Raesfeld will provide the groundwork for the workshop discussions. Apart from the hosting TSO Amprion, several TSC members are also part of the RGI family: 50Hertz from Germany, the Croatian TSO HOPS, Swissgrid from Switzerland, and the Dutch-German TSO TenneT. Since its foundation in 2009, RGI supports the development of the transmission system infrastructure needed for integrating renewable energy.
